Just Be Yourself

I came across a blog in blogland with an entry titled something like:
"How to present yourself on your blog"
I have multiple problems with this, but I'll give you my highlights:
  • I started my blog to be real, as did I hope everyone else, so I really don't think someone needs to know how to "present" themselves.
  • The thing I love about blogging is meeting different amazing people across the world. I don't want everyone to present themselves in the same way...it would be BORING!
  • The advice seemed to focus on filtering yourself and making sure you are going to present a message everyone will be happy with and want to read...well, I am just going to tell you, you can't make everyone happy and be yourself at the same time.
  • Life is hard enough.  I am honestly not draw to the blogs that always present life as being perfect...It makes me feel like a failure.  Just being honest.

I am sure some people reading this are saying, "Well, you didn't have to read it or follow their advice."  Which I totally agree with, but I want readers to know that there are people out, like me, there who want to see blogs that are real and  don't think you need to present yourself in any particular way.  I can speak for myself and say I don't want to present myself in a way I am not because I feel I owe my readers something and I don't want someone following me that is going to be disappointed in my content when I forgot how or get tired of "presenting" myself in a particular way.

Moral of the story, be yourself in this thing we call blogging, because there are people out there who WANT to get to know the real you, they want to support the real you, and you may just meet some amazing people along the way like I have.

Rant over.

  1. I agree! I struggle with blogging sometimes as far as how real I want to get- I wrote a couple posts about some life stuff that I was going through, and I took them down pretty quick. Not because of the reaction they got, but because I wasn't that brave, having that out there that way. Hopefully my courage will increase and I can continue on this great, wide blogging journey.

  2. i 100% agree; it's why i only follow blogs where i feel the writer is REAL and HONEST. you can usually tell by the posts they put up like random thoughts, rants, stuff they love etc.

my blog is filled with random crap that no one cares about, has a lot of swearing because i have trouble filtering that out and just rambles on but it's mine and i love it!

  3. I completely agree as well. I may filter some of what I say now and again, but if I do that's more for me than anyone else - I can be very emotional and I do put a bit of a guard up to protect myself, if I opened up completely I'd feel very vulnerable. But I wouldn't change what I write to make myself appear a different way, no way. I am who I am!

  4. I agree with you! I don't have a filter-- my blog is MY SPACE to rant and rave, to share my emotions, and although it's public, it's like my journal. I can choose what to share. And I'm glad you shared this!!

  5. I completely agree. I have been toying with the idea of getting into this whole blogging world but I am unsure of the route I want to go. I want something that allows me to be open and honest while discussing randomness about myself and family. I'm worried I will stroll down too many avenues and not have a clear focus though. I just discovered your blog and am truly enjoying you and it!

  6. I really don't like the idea of a post like that either. How to present yourself, how to gain followers, blah, blah, blah. I think I'm over it. I can only be me.

  7. AGREED!!! 110% agree! I love the people that are just open and honest. You can truly tell they are heartfelt, down-to-earth people and I LOVE that! My blog is COMPLETELY random! lol! Thanks for posting this! Glad to know there are more people out there like me! :-)

  8. And this is why I love you and your blog! And this is so so true. If we were all the same, who BLAH would that be? I love being real on my blog. Gotta do that!

  9. I absolutely agree with you. I don't need to present myself in a certain way, and neither should anyone else. Just write about the things you want to write about and be who you want to be when you want to be on your blog.
You should't 'be' a certain something on a blog, you should just be you.

  10. Honestly, if you can't be real online where you meet complete strangers that have no prior judgment of you, how you gonna be real in real life? I also think being more real and raw helps people to relate to you, because some people are afraid of admitting things, but once somebody does it, you can bond with them and feel like you're human again. I love your posts and I wouldn't change a thing!

  11. I'm positively certain that not everyone who reads my blog will like it or be happy about what I've written about, and I'm totally cool with that. If I wasn't, then I shouldn't be blogging publicly. :)

  12. I am all for ranting and I agree with you that is a little bit of a silly post if people don't know that they should be themselves on their blog so they are fun and entertaining.

  14. I definitely like seeing "real" posts. Reading about perfection all the time would just make me feel inadequate!

  15. Another reason why I love blogging. I'm all for being you and being real. Life is not all rainbows and butterflies and I don't expect nor want bloggers to try and show their life as perfect. Great post!!

  16. Love that quote! Life is not worth trying to be someone else or be better than someone else. Great quote!! Just wish more people lived by it. Stopping by from the blog hop!
